Vondelpark, Amsterdam's most famous park, draws about 10 million visitors each year. Located in the Amsterdam-Zuid borough, west of Leidseplein and Museumplein, the 116-acre (47-hectare) park opened in 1865 as Nieuwe Park. It was later renamed after the 17th-century playwright and poet Joost van den Vondel. Vondelpark includes ponds, an open-air theater, playgrounds, and several cafes.
