Uhuru Gardens

Nairobi, Kenya

About

Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum in Nairobi is Kenya's largest memorial park, commemorating the country's independence from the British Empire on December 12, 1963. "Uhuru" is the Swahili word for "freedom."

The park includes three significant sites:

  • A Mũgumo tree, marking the spot where the Union Jack (or the Flag of the Colony of Kenya) was lowered and the Kenyan flag was raised. The tree is especially important to the Kikuyu people.
  • The independence monument, built in 1973, which features a 24-meter column topped with clasped hands and a dove. This commemorates the declaration of independence at midnight on December 12, 1963, and the inauguration of Kenya's first president, Jomo Kenyatta, that same night. A statue of soldiers raising the Kenyan flag stands on one side.
  • A fountain that celebrates "Twenty-Five years of Uhuru – peace, love and unity."

The gardens offer a peaceful atmosphere for reflection.
