The Jardin du Luxembourg, also called the Luxembourg Garden or, informally, le Luco, is in Paris's 6th arrondissement. Marie de' Medici, the widow of King Henry IV, began creating the garden in 1612 along with the Luxembourg Palace as her new residence.
Today, the garden is owned by the French Senate, which meets in the palace. It covers 23 hectares and includes lawns, tree-lined promenades, tennis courts, flowerbeds, orchards, and model sailboats on the Grand Bassin, an octagonal pond. The Medici Fountain, built in 1620, is another well-known feature. The name Luxembourg comes from the Latin Mons Lucotitius, the name of the hill where the garden is located. It remains one of Paris's most loved parks.
