Getting There
There are several ways to reach the Schlossberg, so you can choose the one that works best. For a scenic trip, the Schlossbergbahn funicular departs from Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai, offering great views on the way up.
Another option is the modern Schlossberg lift, a glass elevator accessed through the tunnel system at the base of the hill, which will take you to the top quickly. If you want to be active, you can climb the 'Kriegssteig' staircase, a path with 260 steps that leads up to the park.
Keep in mind that parking is limited near the bottom of Schlossberg. Graz's public transport system is an easy way to get there.
What to Expect
The Schlossberg has amazing views. You can see the city from the Uhrturm terrace. Besides the Clock Tower, there are walking trails through the park's gardens, with paths for every pace and interest.
To see everything, explore the historical spots, and maybe eat at a cafe, give yourself 2-3 hours. It can get crowded in the summer evenings, especially during amphitheater events.
Tips & Tricks
Check out the Uhrturm. The clock's hands are backwards, with the larger hand showing the hours and the smaller one showing the minutes.
For a break, have a meal or drink at one of the cafes or restaurants on the hill while enjoying the views.
The Glockenturm bell tower is another spot to see. If there's a show at the amphitheater, it's a fun experience in a beautiful place.
Best Times to Visit
Go to Schlossberg in the early morning for a quiet visit. There will be fewer people, so you can enjoy the views as the city wakes up. Sunset also offers great city views for photos.
Weekdays are usually less busy than weekends, making it easier to explore the trails and attractions.
Spring and fall have nice weather for hiking, enjoying the gardens, and climbing the stairs, without summer heat or winter cold.
